As the original iPad has completed a year, its new version — iPad2 — has taken the Indian market by storm. Launched on March 25 in 26 countries across the globe — it was launched in the US earlier — the tablet PC is certainly the hottest gadget around. Or that’s what it seems with the demand it has generated in the Indian grey market.

Mumbai’s gadget freaks found Apple’s latest tablet PC — yet to be launched in India — at the Heera Panna market. Even eBay, the online auction site, sports several listings of iPad2, also offering to home-deliver the device for prices starting at Rs 36,000.

If grey market suppliers are to be believed, there are thousands of fans who have already bought their iPad2 and iPhone 4. A retailer, who owns four electronics shops in Hyderabad’s Jagdish market, says, “We are selling 5-6 iPad2 every week. Even the original iPad, before its launch, sold just 2-3 units a week.”

In New Delhi’s Palika Bazaar, an electronics store offered a second hand iPad 2 — on claims that it was barely used it for a few days — for Rs 33,000.

The newest iPad is touted to be thinner, faster and features a pair of cameras for video chat. Apple has kept the starting price of both, iPad and iPad2, at $499.

Anticipating the Indian demand, online sellers Prateek and Hitesh who sell electronics products on eBay, pre-ordered five iPad2 tablet PCs from the US at the time of the launch. “We sold our first iPad2 in India to a buyer in Gujarat for Rs 46,000 (32-GB model). We now have seven iPad2 sourced from Singapore that we intend to sell online,” they added.
