Flickr: iPad2 Camera Has Only 23 Active Daily Users

According to Flickr's camera usage statistics, the iPad 2's camera is used by very few people — only 23 active daily users. And so far, 12,811 photos have been taken and uploaded to Flickr with the device. By comparison, the iPhone 4 has 4,402 daily active users; more than a million photos have been taken with the device.

[More from Mashable: iKeyboard Enhances Touch Typing on iPad]

We don't have exact numbers of iPad 2 sales, but the tablet has been on the market since March 11. According to Apple, strong sales have resulted in a record-setting quarter, with analysts estimating that about half a million devices sold in during the iPad 2's first weekend on the market.

The iPad 2's camera has been one of the most criticized aspects of the device: At 0.7 megapixels, it's only good for the most basic tasks. Still, with millions of iPad 2s in customers' hands, one would expect that more people would be using the device. But the significantly low number of daily active users on Flickr shows that is not the case.

SPECIAL: Should you be queuing up for the iPad2?

Last updated on: May 9, 2011?10:41 ISTPriyanka Joshi

There are plenty of reasons to own the Apple iPad2. However, if you already own an iPad, there may not be enough reasons to upgrade.

Who should buy the iPad2?

Those who want easy access to the internet on the move and are avid multi-media users, a tablet device makes for a good choice.

The iPad2 has a catalogue of 65,000 dedicated applications, promises a 10-hour battery life, an enhanced operating system and the facility to make video calls, but maintains the same price tag as the first generation iPad.

While we agree that the iPad2 is a step ahead of the iPad 1, if you already have an iPad, there's really little rationale in upgrading.

We feel that owners of the original device should hold onto it for another year or so until the next generation of tablets hit the market.

Those still lugging notebooks to vacations or office trips, should head to the demo units at Apple stores.

What to do with the iPad2?

Equipped with a dual core processor, which makes it a credible device for creating multimedia content, the iPad2 can be your standalone computing device.

We have maintained that the iPad is primarily superior to any other product out in the market because of the apps. It has more apps than the Android, BlackBerry, Symbian or Windows Phone 7.

According to Apple, dedicated tablet applications on its app store are now close to 65,000. Even if you choose to download just the free apps, you would have ample content to keep you engaged.

The iMovie editing suite and Garage Band apps show off what the iPad is capable of - creating tunes, editing videos or adding audio clips to your vacation images is just a touch away.

Even if you have never tried editing your videos or adding music to your slideshows, you will have no problems doing so on your iPad2, thanks to the apps.

There's still no USB, SD card-reader, Flash support and no removable battery and while it may be unfair to expect these features from Apple - it's clear that rivals like Samsung, Acer, Sony and Motorola are delivering on the features front.

The iPad2 comes with an HD connection kit (though it costs extra). Simply, plug on the iPad to your television and watch shows or surf on a larger screen. Imagine watching YouTube videos or your Powerpoint presentations on TV.

How is iPad2 better than the iPad1?

The iPad2 is significantly faster than the iPad 1 especially while running CPU- and GPU-intensive functions. The credit goes to the new 1 GHz dual-core A5 processor that powers the iPad2

Although the screen size and resolution remains the same (9.7 inches and 1024 x 768, respectively), since iPad2's graphics chip pumps out visuals nine times faster, you can expect to see an impressive rendering of apps and games.

We noticed that the hardware improvement on the iPad2 allows better speeds while exploring virtual worlds or scrolling through simulated landscapes than the iPad 1.

The iPad2 is 15 per cent lighter (607g down from 730g of iPad 1) and 33 per cent thinner than its predecessor. Numbers aside, the new 8.8-mm thick iPad2 is a beauty to hold.

While you may argue the quality of the camera on the iPad2 - the front-facing camera is a VGA and the one on the rear does not hit the 1-megapixel mark - the images that you capture on your tablet PC are not bad.

They are not sharp but they are good to share. Clearly, Apple didn't design this device for taking high-quality still photos but it is ideal for video chatting with friends.

What makes the iPad2 better?

It was Apple that revived the tablet PC industry with the launch of the iPad last year.

Having witnessed the overwhelming consumer reaction to iPad1, the competition spurred into action and launched its own tablet PCs hoping to cash in on the emerging opportunity.

Second, no one can claim an app store with 65,000 tablet-ready apps. Most of the Android-supported tablets give access to smartphone apps from the Android market place and that's simply not good enough.

According to the specifications available, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 seem to be technically superior devices and the Android 3.0 Honeycomb (tablet-ready version of the OS) that comes pre-loaded has also been received positively.

What remains to be seen is how soon these devices will be available in India and at what price range.

How much will you have to pay?

Entry-level model of the iPad2 costs Rs 29,500 (16GB' only Wi-Fi) while the 32GB Wi-Fi-only model is priced at Rs 34,500 and the 64GB Wi-Fi model comes for Rs 39,500.

The iPad2 with Wi-Fi and 3G is between Rs 36,900 and Rs 46,900 for the 64GB model.

Don't forget to add that chic Smart Cover - available in a range of colours in vibrant polyurethane or rich leather for Rs 2,100 and Rs 3,800 respectively - to complete your iPad2 buy.

If you are planning to buy your first iPad, then choosing between a Wi-Fi and 3G model might seem like a daunting task. The answer is simple: If you have an iPhone then it makes sense to purchase a Wi-Fi-enabled iPad2 and tether the iPad to your iPhone using the new HotSpot feature in iOS 4.3.

But why pay an extra premium for the 3G unit that could a punch a hole in your pocket while paying the monthly data charges, when you can simply tether your tablet PC to your iPhone?

Coming to India tomorrow: iPad2

April 27: Surprising sceptics and confounding ground theorists, Apple today announced the launch of the iPad2 in India from April 29 at prices just Rs 2,000 more than those for the iPad1.

The launch comes a day after the iPad2 hit stores in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa, and the UAE. China will get a Wi-Fi version only in May.

The pricing is pretty nifty for the Wi-Fi models, with the 16GB device available at Rs 29,500. The 32GB Wi-Fi model will retail for Rs 34,500, and the 64GB model for Rs 39,500.

The Wi-Fi + 3G devices are slightly more expensive, with the 16GB model priced at Rs 36,900, the 32GB model at Rs 41,900, and the 64GB Model at Rs 46,900. All prices include the value-added tax.

“Apple’s terrific pricing and timing strategy will give a tough time to competition,” said Rajat Agrawal, executive editor of online technology portal BGR India.

In Calcutta, the devices will be available at Imagine ?the authorised Apple retailer ? which has stores at City Centre malls in Salt Lake and Rajarhat. A spokesperson for the Apple premium re-seller said he expected higher footfalls this weekend and hoped that it would translate into higher sales.

The iPad1 came to India in early January, nine months after its US launch. The delayed launch sparked criticism that Apple was treating India as a dumping ground for products that were clearly at the end of the product cycle.

Not any more.

Apple’s brand new tablet went on sale in the US on March 11. That it is coming to India within seven weeks signals that the $65-billion technology giant based in Cupertino, California, is changing its strategy in India.

Early birds in India who had forked out big premiums for devices sourced from the grey market or scalpers peddling the stuff through online sites like eBay may kick themselves for failing to outguess the honchos at Cupertino.

There are compelling reasons to opt for the iPad2.

Front and rear FaceTime cameras. Now many popular apps can be released for the iPad. Video chat apps on the iPad were not possible until now. Of course, you can also make FaceTime “video calls” to the millions of devices with FaceTime.

Easier to carry: iPad2 features an entirely new design that is 33 per cent thinner and up to 15 per cent lighter than the original iPad. The aluminium frame around the outside has been reduced to an almost invisible edge. The front is a sheet of glass surrounded by a bezel available in black and white.

Faster graphics performance. With up to nine times better graphics performance, apps, especially games, can now support really stunning spectacles.

Faster processing performance. The iPad2 features Apple’s new dual-core A5 processor for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics. From more speedy interaction to improved loading times, the dual-core processor is really a noticeable change. All this is delivered with up to 10 hours of battery life.

iMovie. Only the iPad2 will be able to run the tablet version of Apple’s popular video-editing software, iMovie. This app changes everything for video editors, allowing them to edit videos on the go without skipping a beat. A full-fledged Photoshop app is on the anvil.

India’s tablet PC market is estimated at one lakh a year, which will see a steady growth of 20 per cent as high-speed data through 3G and Wi-Fi penetration gather pace. Globally, Apple sold over 15 million units of the original iPad in less than a year.

Experts say Apple doesn’t have a serious competitor in the tablet market yet. “Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab will be available in India only in June, while RIM’s Playbook will come next month. However, reviews for the Playbook are not very encouraging,” Agrawal said.

Japanese electronics giant Sony yesterday unveiled two tablet computers running Google’s Android operating system. However, they will be available globally only in October-November and the official India launch is uncertain.

However, competition in India is not perturbed. Samsung, which has positioned its Galaxy Tab in the super smartphone category, expects 2011 and 2012 to be big years for the domestic tablet market and is ready with an “Indian” sales strategy.

Experts said the competition could start to heat up for Apple in 2012 when some players ? probably companies such as Asus and Acer ? play price warriors.

iPad2 queue turns ugly in China

Beijing (The Star/ANN) - The iPad2 frenzy has gripped Beijing, so much so that a freak incident involving four visitors to an Apple Store at the trendy Sanlitun Village shopping complex in the Chinese capital puts its retail boom in a different light.

Last Saturday, two men and two women suffered injuries in a scuffle with a foreign worker of the Apple Store.

The foreigner came out of the store and bashed a man with a stick for allegedly jumping queue as scores of shoppers lined up to buy the newly-released gadget.

According to news reports, the man was thrown against the corner of an outside wall. The man's mother and aunt as well as another man who confronted the foreigner also suffered some minor injuries during the fracas.

Eye-witnesses said the glass door of the store was smashed as several members of the crowd surged forward to stop security guards from closing the store.

"He (the foreign worker) is about 1.9m tall," Beijing Times quoted the man as saying. "He was saying something, but I do not understand English and ignored him. He grabbed me by the collar and hit me."

Chaoyang district police said the foreigner was maintaining order as some visitors had jumped queue and there were also several touts in the crowd.

Following the incident, the foreigner and injured parties resolved the case for a compensation of 20,000 yuan (US$3,075), the police said. However, police could not confirm the identity of the man involved in the fracas with the foreign worker.

Whether the man was a scalper or a shopper, there is no denying that the tout menace is a big problem in many Chinese cities.

At the theatre, touts would harass those outside the venue. At any sports event or exhibition, too, they would offer to buy a ticket or even accreditation.

A week after the incident, scalpers were still outside Apple Stores in Sanlitun Village and Xidan offering iPad merchandise to visitors to the stores.

"Add 200 yuan more to buy iPad2; each 16G iPad2 costs 3,880 yuan," one scalper said. "Two days later when there is a shortage, it will be more expensive."

Graphic designer Lin Zihan, who plans to buy an iPad2 online, said there was too much speculative buying and selling in China.

The scalpers would usually sweep all the legally imported goods and sell them at a higher price.

However, Lin said that consumers could buy online for less iPad2 that had been smuggled into China from Hong Kong, the United States and other countries.

He added that speculation by scalpers had caused an increase in the prices of the product in China.

"The same thing happened when sales of iPhone4 started in China," he noted. "I would rather wait a bit longer to buy an iPad2 than give the touts the chance to make money.

"I really hate the touts. If you do not crack down on them, they will not only speculate on trivial consumer goods but they might also move on to bigger things, and that could be harmful to the nation."

The Apple Stores have posted signboards warning scalpers that action would be taken against them if they were found selling products at higher prices. The Apple management advised consumers to buy the goods at authorised outlets, and not from scalpers.

Prior to its launch last Friday, Apple Stores in Beijing had limited sales to two iPad2 per customer. But the ruling was subsequently recinded as sales assistants at the stores said consumers could buy as many as they wanted. Industry experts said that the move would result in more goods ending up in the hands of scalpers.

There have been supply shortages of iPad1 and iPhone before when the scalpers took advantage of the situation. Consumers had nowhere to go but the scalpers.

Unless Apple can ensure adequate supply of iPad2, the scalpers will always have a market.

The first Apple Store opened in Sanlitun Village in 2008, and the American company had since added three more stores in Xidan and Shanghai's Huaihai Road and Pudong.

According to statistics provided by Apple, sales of its products in China raked in about US$5bil in the past six months, of which an estimated US$450mil was from the Sanlitun Village store.

Upgrade to iPad2 well worth the cost | DERK COLUMN

I've had a few weeks of hands-on time with the new iPad2 now and I can finally offer an opinion on whether the upgrade is worth it.

The answer is a solid yes.

I base this on a couple of factors, not the least of which is the solid resale value of the first version. My original iPad was a top-of-the-line 64GB version. About a week after its successor's March 11 release, its resale value on Gazelle was $530. That amount, subtracted from the $829 price for an iPad2, gave me a net cost of $299.

For that I got the latest version, including 3G service on Verizon, dual-core processors and twice as much system RAM, from 256MB to 512MB.

So what is the real difference?

For one, the dual-core processor and the extra RAM give the iPad2 noticeably more horsepower in everyday tasks such as Web browsing or using apps like Friendly for Facebook. With apps that take a little more "oomph" — such as The Daily Scrabble or even, yes, Angry Birds — the tablet is much more fluid and responsive. Movies launch quicker, photos pop onto the screen and the whole thing just seems faster. (Professional benchmarks prove this.)

The iPad2 has improved portability. It's 33 percent thinner than the original and, at 1.3 pounds, about 15 percent lighter. You would not think this would make much difference, but the new version just feels better.

The Smart Cover, the iPad2's revolutionary cover, really adds to the experience. I didn't fully understand the fuss around the cover until I got one. I opted for the $69 leather version instead of the $39 polyurethane version.

The cover's secret is hidden magnets that form hinges on one side and, on the other, firmly close. A video on the Apple website explain it all but basically some hidden magnets on one side form the hinges and the other close the other side firmly. It folds up to form a stand. If that was not cool enough, when the magnet closes, the iPad2 shuts off. When you open the flap, the device turns back on.

The cover has a few faults. One is that it leaves the back uncovered and susceptible to scratches. (A number of third parties have already come out with back covers or options instead of the Smart Cover.) But the lack of a rear cover keeps the device thin and light.

Also, if you carry the iPad2 in a backpack or other bag and jostle it a lot, your tablet can turn on and off quite a bit, draining the battery. The iPad2 will turn itself off after a few minutes but a number of these events will leave you without a full charge after a while.

I just plan to take care how I handle the iPad2. All in all, it's a great upgrade. I recommend getting it — if you can find one.

Does It Work? Home Edition-iPad2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Cindy McLeod is a homemaker who is fascinated by gadgets, and?was chosen to test the iPad 2.

"I got an iPad, look see and now I've got to learn how to use it," said Mcleod.

All that she knew about the King of Tablets is what she had? seen on TV. "I really didn't know what it would look like, I've just seen them on TV," she said.

But she is a quick learner. Her first challenge was getting connected to iTunes. "I had a little trouble at first but I kept working with it," said McLeod.

She downloaded books, a guitar, and a piano. "That was cool," she said. "You can play it and I can play it."

She likes the calendar and the notebook, which she shares with her granddaughter, and she discovered the iPad 2 has a reverse camera.

Her biggest challenge was understanding a wi-fi connection versus cellular data.?However, after a few days of learning the iPad 2, McLeod said it worked beyond her expectations.

"I am glad to have it,?yes very much," said McLeod.????????????????????

SingTel to begin selling iPad2 this Saturday

SINGTEL begins selling Apple's iPad 2 tablet computers on Saturday (May 14).

Prices start at $399 for the low-end 16GB models; monthly subscription will be $40 a month for 50GB of data.

By comparison, buying it direct from Apple will set you back $668 for the same model.

Consumers will also be able to buy multi-SIM plans, that is, to get an additional SIM card for the iPad, for $10.70 a month. This will allow them to share the 12GB of data they typically get with a smartphone plan.

Both white and black models will be available, but the company notes that 'due to limited stocks quantity at launch, customers who are interested to purchase iPad 2 with SingTel at our launch event will be required to book an appointment for the purchase'.

Earlier this week, StarHub and M1 said they will be announcing their iPad 2 price plans 'in the coming weeks'. To register interest for the iPad 2 with SingTel's plans, visit: info.singtel.com/personal/communication/ipad2

Queen orders Apple's iPad2 after Prince William and Harry show her gadget

By Daily Mail Reporter

Technology fan: The Queen is said to have ordered an iPad2

The Queen has joined the millions of people around the world hooked on the latest technology and ordered her own iPad2, it emerged today.

Prince William and Harry, who both own versions of the device, reportedly introduced their grandmother to the tablet-style computer.

The 85-year-old monarch is said to have been so impressed with the touch screen device that she immediately ordered staff to buy her one.

She hopes to use the popular computer for long journeys around the country when she is inside the Royal car or train.

'The Princes think it is hilarious. They love the fact that their gran wants an iPad and think she's really cool,' a source told the Sun.

'For a woman of her age, she is very switched on. It was only a matter of time before she asked someone to go and get her one.'

It is said that when the princes showed their grandmother the device, she was taken with how easy it was to use. The lightness of the iPad2 and the large screen were also big attractions to her.

The Queen has owned iPods since they were introduced several years ago. In 2005 she bought a state-of-the-art model capable of holding 1,500 of her favourite songs.

She also received an iPod as a gift from Barack Obama when he visited London in 2009.

But the iPad, which has developed by Apple, has taken the technology world by storm since it was first released in April 2010.

An iPad2 was released in March this year. A staggering 15 million devices have so far been sold worldwide.

The Queen already has a mobile phone and internet connections so adapting to the gadget, which allows game, applications and web-browsing, will be easy for her.

Tablet PC Frenzy

The Apple iPad2 is now in stores in India and 25-year-old Rachit K Pandeya is one of those fanboys who waited patiently outside an Apple premium reseller’s shop in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, to get his unit. “I hadn’t bought any tablet PC and was happy with my HP notebook but this second-generation device was something I was waiting for ever since its launch early this year,” he says while uncovering his new 64GB iPad2. Proudly fiddling with his prized buy, Pandeya adds, “I have used tablet products from other brands too – some of my friends bought them – but I had my heart set on the iPad2 after seeing Steve Jobs demonstrate its features in his keynote speech.”

The growing set of brand loyalists in India for Apple seems to have made the company reconsider its delayed launch approach in the country. The iPad2 is the first product from the company that was launched within 50 days after its launch in the US. Earlier, the iPhone 4 and the first generation iPad were launched after delays of nine months and 10 months respectively.

A newly-appointed sales executive underlines that he will use the iPad2 at work, “while I am on sales calls at clients’ offices to impress them with my powerpoint pitches delivered through the iPad2.”

Companies like Sony, Dell, Samsung, Lenovo, Research in Motion and Acer, among others, might not have a followership in India like Apple’s but they are not letting up their play in the tablet PC market yet. The notebook segment, the bread-and-butter sector for players, had a share of 16 per cent while netbooks command a 12 per cent share in the seven million notebook market.

According to various estimates, tablet PCs could touch the one million unit mark in India in 2011-12 but Vishal Tripathi of Gartner believes, “Until the tablet PC prices drop to about Rs 15,000-Rs 20,000, it will not become a mass market device. Going ahead, we expect tablet PCs, netbooks and notebooks to co-exist in the Indian market.”

Samsung, the maker of the Galaxy Tab, has been in hot pursuit of Apple. With three models of Galaxy Tab, including a 10-inch screen PC, the company is confident it can capture a 40 per cent share in the Indian tablet PC segment this year. Ranjit Yadav, country head (mobile & IT), Samsung, says, “Samsung will offer a diverse portfolio in the tablet market this year. With tablets starting at Rs 24,000, we believe Samsung is positioned ahead of many in the market and will be aggressively marketing its devices through mobile and retail outlets.”

Computers accounted for about 33 per cent of the Indian consumer electronics spending in 2010, as per a BMI forecast. Acer is set to carve out its share too. This month, Saji Kumar, head (product management), Acer, will unveil three new tablet PCs for the Indian consumer. He says, “We are confident that our 10-inch tablet PC – which will be available in both Windows and Android platforms – will attract buyers more than the competition.” The Acer tablets will sport price tags in the range of Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000. Acer’s dual OS approach for its tablet PCs coupled with its distribution network that includes 85 Acer Malls (exclusive outlets) and 180 retail points may just work for the brand in attracting the crowds from Tier-I and Tier-II cities.

From the competition’s perspective, ignoring Adobe’s Flash and backing HTML5 may act against the iPad, as over 80 per cent of today’s online videos use Flash. Competition, on the other hand, has embraced Adobe Flash, a multimedia platform that adds animation and interactivity to web pages.

Then there are players like Sony, which claims to have sold 120,000 notebooks in India in FY2009-10 and expects to sell 250,000 notebooks by FY 2010-11. Tadato Kimura, GM (Marketing), Sony India, reasons, “As the utility value of both the tablet PCs and notebooks is totally different, the launch of tablet PCs will not affect the notebook market.” The company recently unveiled its first tablet computer, following Samsung Electronics, a year after the Apple’s iPad spurred a surge in demand for the device. Sony’s S1 model will feature a 9.4-inch liquid-crystal display, as well as front and rear cameras and will run on Google’s Android operating system for tablets.

The only thing that remains unaddressed on the PC vendors’ wish-list is to position their brands the way Apple has among users like Anu Agarwal, who runs her own business in Mumbai. Her two sons have made their home a mini Apple store, complete with a 21-inch iMac and Macbook PCs. “I find it tough to check e-mail and attachments with my BlackBerry. With the iPad2, I can read mails on a bigger screen without being bogged down with a heavy laptop-like device,” she says, while walking into the Apple iStore in Mumbai to book herself an iPad2.

Should you be queuing up for the iPad2?

Should you be queuing up for the iPad2?Priyanka Joshi / Mumbai?May 09, 2011, 0:20 IST

With a host of new features, the device is definitely worth a buy.

While we agree that the iPad2 is a step ahead of the iPad 1, if you already have an iPad, there’s really little rationale in upgrading.

The iMovie editing suite and Garage Band apps show off what the iPad is capable of — creating tunes, editing videos or adding audio clips to your vacation images is just a touch away. Even if you have never tried editing your videos or adding music to your slideshows, you will have no problems doing so on your iPad2, thanks to the apps.

There’s still no USB, SD card-reader, Flash support and no removable battery – and while it may be unfair to expect these features from Apple – it’s clear that rivals like Samsung, Acer, Sony and Motorola are delivering on the features front.

Although the screen size and resolution remains the same (9.7 inches and 1024 x 768, respectively), since iPad2’s graphics chip pumps out visuals nine times faster, you can expect to see an impressive rendering of apps and games.

While you may argue the quality of the camera on the iPad2 – the front-facing camera is a VGA and the one on the rear does not hit the 1-megapixel mark – the images that you capture on your tablet PC are not bad. They are not sharp but they are good to share. Clearly, Apple didn’t design this device for taking high-quality still photos but it is ideal for video chatting with friends.

Most of the Android-supported tablets give access to smartphone apps from the Android market place and that’s simply not good enough.

Entry-level model of the iPad2 costs Rs 29,500 (16GB’ only Wi-Fi) while the 32GB Wi-Fi-only model is priced at Rs 34,500 and the 64GB Wi-Fi model comes for Rs 39,500. The iPad2 with Wi-Fi and 3G is between Rs 36,900 and Rs 46,900 for the 64GB model. Don’t forget to add that chic Smart Cover – available in a range of colours in vibrant polyurethane or rich leather for Rs 2,100 and Rs 3,800 respectively – to complete your iPad2 buy.

The iPad2 Will Appeal to Lawyers

Posted by Mark BelloMay 11, 2011 5:38 PM

The following guest post is from Lior Levin, a marketing consultant who works for an E2 visa lawyer from New York.

The impending launch of the Apple iPad 2 was announced early this month, on March 2, 2011. Many lawyers, attorneys, and paralegals have found the original iPad to be a great asset in almost every area. Yet it remains to be seen whether the upgraded iPad 2 will have the same impact on the legal field.

Dual Camera

Perhaps the most noticeable upgrade on the iPad 2 is the addition of dual cameras. Set up in a similar way to the iPhone 4, the dual cameras can be ideal for many facets of the legal field.

The VGA-quality camera above the touch screen of the iPad 2 allows you to be seen via video phone during video conferences. For many lawyers, this can be a far better way to discuss a case with an expert witness remotely than talking over the phone. The benefit of being able to see facial expressions and develop a deeper level of rapport is immediately obvious with a video conference call.

There is a second camera embedded on the other side of the iPad 2, very much akin to the one on the iPhone 4, that allows you to take still photos as well as shoot good quality 720p high-definition video. Capturing a site of a claim or case on video can give a good lawyer a far greater sense of spatial and temporal context than a photo can offer.

It should be noted that not all lawyers will find the addition of a dual camera system to be a drawcard for upgrading immediately to the iPad 2. This could be because some courts may not admit recording devices into session.

However, this minor drawback shouldn’t detract from the immediate benefits that can be derived from having access to dual cameras on an iPad.

Dual Core Processor

The addition of a dual-core processor, known as the A5, is another new feature in the iPad 2 that Apple execs promise will be twice as fast as the preceding model. There’s no need to worry about lag speed or slow boot up of apps when you need them in a hurry.

Streamlined Design

The new iPad 2 features a new design that reduces the weight from the original iPad down by 100g. Apple decided to keep the same 9.7 inch monitor size, but they’ve made the entire iPad a third thinner than it was before, to the point that the iPad 2 is now thinner than the iPhone 4.

HDMI Adapter

HDMI monitors are used more frequently in conferences everywhere these days, so the addition of a HDMI adaptor means you can now interface your iPad 2 with a HDMI display easily.

This means it will become much easier to share multi-media presentations using one simple cable to connect your iPad to the display. You’re also able to charge your iPad even while you’re still presenting, so there’s no fear of your battery going flat part way through.

Increased Resolution

The old iPad limited your screen resolution size to 1024x768, but the iPad 2 now allows you to increase your screen resolution size up to 1080x720, which means you’re able to take advantage of the big screen feel to show more detail when required.

While the overall upgrades to the iPad 2 don’t seem earth-shattering, there is certainly enough range and scope within the additional features to make the upgrade worthwhile for any attorney or paralegal.

Apple Starts IPad2 Sales in China as Lenovo Contests With LePad

May 06, 2011, 6:08 AM EDT By Bloomberg News

May 6 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. started selling the latest version of its iPad tablet computer in China, as the world’s most valuable technology company fends off competition from products offered by local rivals including Lenovo Group Ltd.

Hundreds of people waited in line outside Apple’s store in Shanghai’s Lujiazui financial district before the 8 a.m. opening time. The store sold out of the white-colored version of iPad2 with 16 gigabytes of memory within hours, according to a check by Bloomberg News.

Apple is offering the iPad2 in China, home to its highest- grossing stores worldwide, as demand in the U.S. for the upgraded product surpassed the first version since its debut in March. The Cupertino, California-based company faces increasing competition in China from local vendors of smartphones and tablets including Lenovo and ZTE Corp., according to Shan Chao, an analyst at BDA China, which advises companies.

“They previously had the market all to themselves, but now rival products have sprung up,” Shan said by telephone from Beijing today. “The new upgrades will help Apple, which is already leading local products in terms of technology.”

The new iPad, which comes in white and black, is lighter, thinner, includes a more powerful processor and front and rear cameras, and sells from 3,688 yuan ($568), according to Apple’s China website.

Apple’s stores in China generate, on average, the highest traffic and highest revenue of any company stores in the world, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on a Jan. 18 earnings call.

‘Amazing’ Demand

“We’re working hard to get the iPad2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Carolyn Wu, a Beijing-based spokeswoman at Apple. Demand for the iPad2 “has been amazing,” she said.

Lenovo, China’s biggest maker of personal-computers, started selling its LePad tablet computer in the country in March. The company will use “better knowledge” of the Chinese market to win sales from competitors such as Apple, Chairman Liu Chuanzhi said that month. Prices for the LePad start from 3,499 yuan, according to its website.

ZTE, China’s second-biggest maker of telephone equipment, said last month it aims to sell a combined 12 million smartphones and tablet computers this year.

Apple expanded sales of the latest iPad to Asian markets including Japan, India, Hong Kong and Singapore last week.

iPad2 queue turns ugly

The tout menace is a big problem in many Chinese cities, with the speculation by scalpers causing an increase in the prices of products in China.

THE iPad2 frenzy has gripped Beijing, so much so that a freak incident involving four visitors to an Apple Store at the trendy Sanlitun Village shopping complex in the Chinese capital puts its retail boom in a different light.

Last Saturday, two men and two women suffered injuries in a scuffle with a foreign worker of the Apple Store.

Mad, mad rush: Two injured teenagers being attended to in the aftermath of a scuffle at Apple?s Sanlitun retail store in Beijing on Saturday. ? AP

The foreigner came out of the store and bashed a man with a stick for allegedly jumping queue as scores of shoppers lined up to buy the newly-released gadget.

According to news reports, the man was thrown against the corner of an outside wall. The man?s mother and aunt as well as another man who confronted the foreigner also suffered some minor injuries during the fracas.

Eye-witnesses said the glass door of the store was smashed as several members of the crowd surged forward to stop security guards from closing the store.

?He (the foreign worker) is about 1.9m tall,? Beijing Times quoted the man as saying. ?He was saying something, but I do not understand English and ignored him. He grabbed me by the collar and hit me.?

Chaoyang district police said the foreigner was maintaining order as some visitors had jumped queue and there were also several touts in the crowd.

Following the incident, the foreigner and injured parties resolved the case for a compensation of 20,000 yuan (RM9,200), the police said.

?Add 200 yuan (RM92) more to buy iPad2; each 16G iPad2 costs 3,880 yuan (RM1,784),? one scalper said. ?Two days later when there is a shortage, it will be more expensive.?

Graphic designer Lin Zihan, who plans to buy an iPad2 online, said there was too much speculative buying and selling in China.

The scalpers would usually sweep all the legally imported goods and sell them at a higher price.

However, Lin said that consumers could buy online for less iPad2 that had been smuggled into China from Hong Kong, the United States and other countries.

He added that speculation by scalpers had caused an increase in the prices of the product in China.

?The same thing happened when sales of iPhone4 started in China,? he noted. ?I would rather wait a bit longer to buy an iPad2 than give the touts the chance to make money.

?I really hate the touts. If you do not crack down on them, they will not only speculate on trivial consumer goods but they might also move on to bigger things, and that could be harmful to the nation.?

The first Apple Store opened in Sanlitun Village in 2008, and the American company had since added three more stores in Xidan and Shanghai?s Huaihai Road and Pudong.

According to statistics provided by Apple, sales of its products in China raked in about US$5bil (RM14.7bil) in the past six months, of which an estimated US$450mil (RM2.25bil) was from the Sanlitun Village store.

Apple launches iPad2 in India

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Apple's iPad 2 hit Indian stores on Friday, just over a month after the company started selling the updated version of its popular tablet device in the United States.

The iPad 2, a thinner and faster version that features two cameras for video chat, is priced between 29,500 rupees and 46,900 rupees, depending on the model.

"We are completely sold out. We've got advance bookings now," said Rahul Sharma, a sales assistant at iWorld, one of Apple's premium resellers, in New Delhi.

Some people were disappointed as they missed out on the new tablet on the first day, Sharma added.

The model with 16 GB of memory that works only on Wi-Fi is priced at 29,500 rupees, while the one that can operate on both Wi-Fi as well as third-generation (3G) mobile networks costs 36,900 rupees.

Customers have the option to buy an iPad 2 with 16, 32 or 64 GB of memory and can choose a model that works only on Wi-Fi or on both Wi-Fi and 3G.

Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates Apple will ship 39.7 million units for all models of the iPad this year.

The first iPad - which went on sale a year ago - sold 300,000 units on the first day, 500,000 in the first week, and crossed the 1 million unit mark in 28 days.

Apple Starts Selling IPad2 in China as Lenovo Contests With LePad Tablet

May 6 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. started selling the latest version of its iPad tablet computer in China, as the world’s most valuable technology company fends off competition from products offered by local rivals including Lenovo Group Ltd. Hundreds of people waited in line outside Apple’s store in Shanghai’s Lujiazui financial district before the 8 a.m. opening time. Bloomberg's Margaret Conley reports. (Source: Bloomberg)

Apple Inc. (AAPL) started selling the latest version of its iPad tablet computer in China, as the world’s most valuable technology company fends off competition from products offered by local rivals including Lenovo Group Ltd. (992)

The Cupertino, California-based company faces increasing competition in China from local vendors of smartphones and tablets including Lenovo and ZTE Corp. (763), according to Shan Chao, an analyst at BDA China, which advises companies.

Gadget freaks' new fetish - iPad2

Gadget freaks' new fetish - iPad2Priyanka Joshi / Mumbai?April 07, 2011, 0:29 IST

As the original iPad has completed a year, its new version — iPad2 — has taken the Indian market by storm. Launched on March 25 in 26 countries across the globe — it was launched in the US earlier — the tablet PC is certainly the hottest gadget around. Or that’s what it seems with the demand it has generated in the Indian grey market.

Mumbai’s gadget freaks found Apple’s latest tablet PC — yet to be launched in India — at the Heera Panna market. Even eBay, the online auction site, sports several listings of iPad2, also offering to home-deliver the device for prices starting at Rs 36,000.

If grey market suppliers are to be believed, there are thousands of fans who have already bought their iPad2 and iPhone 4. A retailer, who owns four electronics shops in Hyderabad’s Jagdish market, says, “We are selling 5-6 iPad2 every week. Even the original iPad, before its launch, sold just 2-3 units a week.”

In New Delhi’s Palika Bazaar, an electronics store offered a second hand iPad 2 — on claims that it was barely used it for a few days — for Rs 33,000.

The newest iPad is touted to be thinner, faster and features a pair of cameras for video chat. Apple has kept the starting price of both, iPad and iPad2, at $499.

Anticipating the Indian demand, online sellers Prateek and Hitesh who sell electronics products on eBay, pre-ordered five iPad2 tablet PCs from the US at the time of the launch. “We sold our first iPad2 in India to a buyer in Gujarat for Rs 46,000 (32-GB model). We now have seven iPad2 sourced from Singapore that we intend to sell online,” they added.

School Committee support iPAD2s for freshmen

The School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to begin the process of putting an iPAD2 into the hands of every freshman in the fall by earmarking $12,000 to get ninth grade teachers iPAD2s as well.

The School Department will take the money from the coming year’s budget.

?“One to one teaching/learning, that is, the classroom in which every student and teacher has a mobile learning technology device with access to the Internet - that is the direction in which education is moving. We want to begin the exploration of this environment of the future, using the iPad2,” Superintendent of Schools Maureen LaCroix said.

She explained that the iPad2 had been chosen over other options because it offers many more applications than any other currently available device, and it has a built in camera/movie camera, making it feasible to create short video projects.

LaCroix’ staff has looked at various devices over the past year, she said, and the iPad2 is unmatched for portability and ten hours of uninterrupted use before recharging is needed.

“The iPad2 has no moving parts to break, applications may be purchased at significant discounts in volume, it has access to FirstClass and Aspen, and applications can be safely installed by students and teachers,” she said.

“In our view, shifting technology is moving the view of students as consumers of information to the view of students as producers of knowledge, content and creative expression,” LaCroix said. “We think this approach will promote inquiry-based, problem-solving approaches to teaching and learning, and higher order thinking skills, as we support students a self-directed, creative problem-solvers.”

The plan LaCroix outlined would introduce the iPad2 to the incoming ninth grade at the high school in September this year, adding a grade each year. “We will start collecting data on how this process goes,”

LaCroix said in a later interview, “to understand what is happening as we go forward.”

The finances of introducing iPad2 will present challenges. To add iPad2 to grades 9 through 12 for all students will take an outlay of $720,000 over a four-year period if the devices are purchased outright, and? $744,000 over a six-year period if leased.

LaCroix noted that there might be sources of funds, such as the Bedford Education Foundation and state grants, to help with bringing the iPad2 to Bedford.

She is seeking money to buy enough devices to start training the 26 ninth grade teachers who will pilot the program in September,

The School Committee voted unanimously to support the program immediately with $12,000 from the current FY 12 budget to provide devices for the ninth grade teachers who will begin using them with students in September.

SSC Marketing Integrates the iPad 2 Into Business

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 3, 2011) - The iPad2 is the second generation of the iPad, a tablet computer developed and marketed by Apple Inc. Apple unveiled the device on March 2, 2011, began selling it by website and retail stores on March 11th, and released it in worldwide on March 25th. With a large high-resolution LED-backlit IPS display, a responsive Multi-Touch screen, instant-on access, incredible battery life and an amazing set of applications available right out of the box, SSC Marketing have said that the "iPad is unlike anything the workforce has ever experienced before" with incredible applications like Mail, Calendar, Notes and Safari in a beautiful, thin and light design, so you stay productive anywhere. With easy, secure integration into business environments and a robust platform for app development, iPad is ready to start working when you are. The iPad serves primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games and web content, and is available in black or white.

SSC Marketing closely follows technology and keeps themselves updated with all product knowledge that they can use to improve their business, keeping an eye on the technology side of business helps them gain the upper hand over their competitors. Having this knowledge has informed SSC Marketing all aspects of the new iPad including the differences and benefits of the new iPad over is predecessor, while the difference in weight is a mere 100 grams, the slimness of this year's model creates the illusion that it is lighter still. This further helps with the iPad's greatest trick: seeming to disappear and become whatever app you're using. And there are apps by the thousand. Around 65,000, in fact, this gives Apple an enormous head start over the competition. Those apps will run faster too, thanks to the iPad 2's A5 dual core processor. The new iPad runs up to twice as fast and graphics performance is nine times faster. The speed improvements can be seen on almost any app; the original iPad didn't feel sluggish before but it will after you've spent some time with the iPad 2.

The other significant additions are the cameras: one on front and one on the back of the iPad 2. The rear camera is capable of 720p HD video but, as with the one in the iPod touch, it's a mediocre stills camera. The front-facing camera, for video conferencing, is VGA - and also works as a stills camera. Now it has cameras, the iPad 2 joins the iPhone 4 and iPod touch in getting FaceTime, Apple's video chat app. In tests - calling an iPhone 4 from an iPad 2, it worked very well. While the picture quality was not pin-sharp, the call was smooth and uninterrupted. It's easy to see this being an excellent accessory to people who travel a lot or those whose friends and family are far away.

With all these new improvements to the iPad, SSC Marketing is looking forward to seeing how they can integrate this newest model into their business.
