Carphone Warehouse keeps taking the tablets as iPad2 sales keep it healthy

{"s" : "AAPL,BUY.DU,^REURTRUSD","k" : "a00,a50,b00,b60,c10,g00,h00,l10,p20,t10,v00","o" : "","j" : ""} Harry Wallop, 17:49, Wednesday 27 July 2011

The phenomenal success of tablet computers, such as Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) 's iPad, has helped Carphone Warehouse shake off a sluggish consumer market in Europe (Chicago Options: ^REURTRUSD - news) and America.

The retailer reported a mixed set of first-quarter trading figures, but said it had tripled sales of tablet devices in the last few months thanks to the launch of the second-generation Apple device and rival gadgets such as the BlackBerry Playbook and the HTC Flyer.

Roger Taylor, the retailer's chief executive said the gadgets had attracted consumers but so too had the "imaginative price points" of the "tethered" versions of the tablets, which contain a SIM card, allowing consumers to surf the internet on the go even if they are outside of a Wi-Fi area. These "tethered" versions generate higher profit margins for Carphone.

But Mr Taylor warned that however exciting the sales of tablets were the company was still only selling thousands a month, rather than tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands.

Tablet sales helped offset weak sales of mobile phones in Europe. The company reported a fall in like-for-like sales of 3.3pc, though it said that a large part of this fall was down to consumers in the UK moving from 18-month to 24-month contracts.

Some consumer campaigners have argued that this switch is unfair on customers, trapping them into overly long expensive contracts. Though the trend is beneficial to mobile phone operators, it has meant that fewer customers have visited Carphone stores to upgrade their phones and buy additional services. Mr Taylor estimated that between 70,000 and 100,000 fewer customers renewed their contracts in the first quarter of the year because of the switch.

Stripping out this factor and the fact that a year ago Apple launched its iPhone 4, like-for-likes sales would have increased by about 2pc, Mr Taylor said.

He added that the best performance had come from Spain and The Netherlands, while Germany and Britain were lacklustre.

Carphone Warehouse said its European operation suffered a 5.5pc drop in connections.

The company did not give an update on Best Buy UK, its joint-venture with the American retailer Best Buy (Dusseldorf: BUY.DU - news) which has attempted to take on the likes of Dixons and Comet in the UK, but which has proved consistently disappointing. The company, faced with a dire market for white goods, has been unable to reach its revised target of 20 stores, let alone 100. There are just 10 stores.

Mr Taylor said the company would provide a full update in September or October.

The shares increased 30 to 435p.

Apple proves Wall Street wrong as iPad2 boost profits

Shares in the Californian company briefly touched $400 (£248) for the first time after Apple reported that profits for the last quarter more than doubled to $7.31bn. Revenues soared more than 80pc to $28.6bn.

Apple’s highest quarterly profits follow a first half in which its shares endured their worst performance in three years. Some analysts were concerned that the decision to delay the release of the new version of the iPhone until September would encourage an emboldened Google to grab more share of the lucrative smartphone market. iPhone sales reached 20.3m in the three months to the end of June, more than double what Apple sold in the same quarter last year and comfortably ahead of Wall Street’s expectations. iPad sales more than doubled to 9.25m, though the 3.95m Mac computers sold trailed some forecasts.

“Apple continues to execute on all fronts, futher distancing itself from industry peers,” said Bill Kreher, an analyst at Edward Jones. “First and foremost, the runaway success of the iPad shows it can create demand from scratch.”

After sinking to a low for the year on June 20, Apple’s shares have increased more than 20pc as the anxieties some held earlier in the year ease.

However, some analysts warned that Tuesday’s report showed that surging iPad sales may be eroding those of the Mac. Tim Cook, who is standing in as Apple chief executive while Steve Jobs is on medical leave, admitted that “we do believe some customers chose to purchase an iPad instead of a Mac during the quarter. But we believe even more customers chose to purchase an iPad over a Windows PC.”

Apple’s board declined to comment on a report last night that some of its board members have discussed a possible successor to Mr Jobs with recruiters and the chief of one technology company. Mr Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, has been on medical leave since January, though he has said he hopes to return to the company. Mr Jobs said the report was “hogwash.”

The company’s run of success over the last five years has left it with $76bn in cash, and analysts said that Apple should consider either paying a dividend or buying back shares.

“It’s an unoptimised use of the balance sheet,” said Brian Marshall, an analyst at Gleacher & Co.

Lexington, KY (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

Getting back into the swing of college will be a lot easier for 30 college students this year. eCampus.com is launching the “EZ Living Sweepstakes” that will give away a desirable dorm room essential each day for 30 days.

Beginning August 15th eCampus.com will be offering a daily giveaway of such items as an Apple iPad 2, an HDTV, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 Kinect and Apple TV. Thirty lucky winners will be awarded one of 30 different prizes each day throughout the back-to-school season. The “EZ Living Sweepstakes”, which can be accessed via Facebook (https://apps.facebook.com/ezlivingsweepstakes), will begin accepting entries August 9, and up until its conclusion September 13. Entering the contest simply requires submitting a name and email address. Every entry remains in the drawing for the entire 30 days.

“After spending a relaxing summer off, we realize it’s hard for students to go back to campus with a positive frame of mind. So, we’re doing our part to help make that transition as effortless as possible,” said Matt Montgomery, CEO of eCampus.com. “College students represent the lifeblood of our business, and the ‘EZ Living Sweepstakes’ is a great way to further cement this connection we have with them.”

eCampus.com has gathered a must-have list of back-to-college essentials that range from the utilitarian (Ipod docking alarm clock radio) to the ultimate (iPad 2). One winner will be drawn at random each day to receive that day’s unique prize. Students are encouraged to re-enter the “EZ Living Sweepstakes” every day to have additional opportunities to win. Sharing news of the sweepstakes with friends will also pay off, as this will net you an additional prize entry.

eCampus.com anticipates that the sweepstakes will increase the already robust constituency of its social media campaigns, and increase its brand awareness as the one-stop shop for all textbook needs.

Jerry King’s Mac411: Easy steps to learn a first iPad

Two months ago I switched from a ‘droid to an iPhone. I’m about to buy an iPad2 for my business. Do you have guidance on how to best prepare to use the iPad?

— SW

Naples

Getting started

Congratulations on your decision. The iPad2, with iOS 4.3 software, is a significant improvement over the original iPad. A new operating system, iOS 5 with more improvements, is due to be released this fall; you can update to the newer iOS then. Prior iPhone experience means you know some of the operational elements of the iPad.

I will cover a few items that may be new to you. Two references are:

iPad 2 User Guide (for iOS 4.3). Download a free PDF file from support.apple.com/manuals.

“Tutor for iPad” Download a $4 video application — the common term now is app — from the iTunes app store. The app may be most useful.

Buttons and connector

The only connector is on the bottom of the iPad. The iPad comes with a cable and power-charging device. Connect the cable to the iPad and the other end to a USB port on your computer. Start iTunes. Your iPad will appear in the sidebar so you can synchronize to the music, videos, books, and Apps stored in your computer. Most USB ports are not powerful enough to charge the iPad; use the charging device. Apple stopped selling MobileMe accounts in June; you can only sync the iPad and iPhone to iTunes with the cable until iCloud is released this fall.

On the top, at the right side is the Sleep, Wake, and Power-on/ off button. Tap this button to control the sleep or wake status. Hold the button down to start the power-off sequence. Don’t power off unless you don’t expect to use the iPad for several days; you want instant gratification from your iPad.

The button at the bottom front is the Home button. This is the primary button to manage use of the iPad.

Screens

iPad’s Apps are displayed on screens that you move between by flicking. A screen can display up to 20 apps (or folders of apps). In addition, there is a dock just above the home button that can display up to six apps. Which screen is displaying is indicated by a lighted dot just above the dock. The leftmost screen is for searching, the next is the Home screen, and the others display apps or folders you have placed there.

I prefer managing app assignments to screens from within iTunes but pressing on an app until all the apps begin jiggling can move apps. Use your finger to slide the app across a screen edge to move to the adjacent screen. Press the Home button to stop the jiggling. It can be more efficient to have only five apps in the Dock. Drag the app you want to move into the sixth position, swipe to the destination screen and drag it onto the screen.

Folders

Many apps (e.g. newspapers) have similar functions. Drag one on top of another and the icon becomes a folder you can name; add more apps by dragging. Tap a folder and it expands to show the included apps; start the desired app by tapping.

Home button use

A single push on the Home button while an app is running brings up the screen that the app was launched from. A follow-up push moves to the Home screen.

A quick double push on the Home button from within an app changes the Dock to display all running apps (except the one that was active). Tap one of these to switch to that being the active app. This is multi-tasking in iOS 4.3.

A quick double push on the Home button when viewing a screen changes the Dock to display all running apps. Tap an app to make it active. You have two additional options at this point:

n Swipe the dock to the right to bring up five control features. The left one is Orientation Lock to disable the rotation sensors. Next is Display Brightness Control followed by controls for audio or video. The fourth control is Sound Volume and the far right control icon transfers to the iPod app.

n Press on an app showing in the dock and it will eventually start the jiggling with a minus symbol at top left. Tap a minus to stop the app from running. Some apps use more battery power; quit them regularly to extend use of the iPad between charging actions.

Battery life

Apple recommends that the battery for mobile devices (iDevices and laptops) be fully discharged monthly. This periodic depletion / recharging extends the life of the lithium battery.

Do you have a question about using your Mac? Send your question to Jerry: AskJWK@Gmail.COM. An index of prior Mac 411 articles is available (tinyurl.com/Mac411Index)

Samsung ties up with Vodafone for Galaxy Tab

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Korean electronics giant Samsung on Wednesday announced the release of Samsung Tab 750, a new version of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, in India market. Samsung has?tied up with Vodafone to offer 3G data usage.

Samung said the Galaxy Tab 750?will be available by the end of August. In addition, Samsung also announced that it would be launching the Galaxy Tab 730 in September.

Touted to be a serious competitor to Apple's iPad2, the current best selling tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab 750 (Galaxy 10.1), which runs on Honeycomb, was launched in February in Barcelona.

Samsung has tied up with Vodafone to offer 3G data usage up to 2GB/month for six months at Rs. 3,000 for Galaxy Tab 750/730 owners.

The Regional Court of Dusseldorf (Germany), which has banned the sale of Samsung Glaxy Tab 10.1in EU, has ruled in favour of Apple’s plea for a pan-European injunction on the tablet, based on Apple’s accusations of copyright infringement relating to the iPad 2.

Free iPad 2 with Credit Card Processing Account Through Swipe Fast

SwipeFast is offering a free iPad 2 for established businesses that process more than $50k/month.

(PRWEB) July 22, 2011

Established businesses that accept credit cards can get a free iPad2 by opening a SwipeFast account. Open a SwipeFast merchant account, and receive an iPad2 after your first month of processing more than $50k.

Companies are increasingly using iPads as business tools. They can be used as in-store sales assistants, for instance to look up wine reviews; as an electronic catalog for merchandise not in stock; a means to sign up for a newsletter; or even for swiping credit cards directly on the iPad.

SwipeFast is a strong believer in adopting new technologies to engage customers. "Companies that project a modern image engender customer trust. Tablets still have a mystique that people like and want to be around. Some competitors have been giving away cheap card readers for mobile devices - we figured, why not just help businesses adopt this technology and give away the iPad?", said Joseph Nisanov, president, SwipeFast.

There's no cost to take advantage of this promotion. A business could switch today to save money on credit card processing and get this valuable business tool while supplies last.

Apple's iPad2 proves big hit as profits smash Wall Street forecasts

{"s" : "AAPL,APC.DE","k" : "a00,a50,b00,b60,c10,g00,h00,l10,p20,t10,v00","o" : "","j" : ""}

Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) has smashed Wall Street expectations yet again, announcing record third quarter sales and profits as the company said it 'sold every iPad it could make'.

Sales of iPhones and iPads more than doubled compared with last year, as Apple (Xetra: 865985 - news) said it made a net profit of $7.31bn (£4.54bn) on revenues of $28.57bn in the quarter ending June 25, smashing expectations of $24.99bn.

Shares rose 6pc to $399.53 in after-hours trading as the company said it sold 9.25million iPads during the quarter, a 183pc increase compared with this time last year.

Apple's 20.34million iPhone unit sales represented a 142pc year-on-year increase.

The only blemish on Apple's shining results came from its iPod sales, which fell 20pc year-on-year to 7.54m units.

“We’re thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent,” said Apple boss Steve Jobs.

“Right now, we’re very focused and excited about bringing iOS 5 and iCloud to our users this fall.”

Shares of the world's most valuable technology company have emerged from the limbo they had fallen into since Mr Jobs took leave last January for unspecified medical reasons.

Shares have gained nearly 19pc since hitting a year low on June 20. The rally has added $54.8bn to Apple's market cap since then.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Philippines : Price, Specs, Hands-on Video, Quick Review

Spotted it at the newly opened Smart-PLDT Jump Store at SM MegaMall CyberZone last night:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the thinnest tablet out in the market today -- according to Samsung.

My initial observations on the device:

1. It's lighter than iPad2 -- because its shell is made largely of glossy plastic vs. iPad2's aluminum body.
2. It's actually thinner than iPad2 -- but I think the latter's tapered edges make Apple's tablet feel a tad more sleek.
3. Despite having a plastic case, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 nonetheless feels well-constructed. You can hold it with one hand on one side and not worry that it might crack in the middle.
4. I'm impressed with the user interface. It's neat and quite easy to use.
5. Love the front-facing camera. I can imagine me and my friends having fun with it in a party -- taking wacky group photos.
6. The tablet handles multi-tasking quite well. Transitions feel smooth too. The dual core chip does its thing well.
7. The keyboard is a joy to use. Even if you have really big fingers, I don't think you'll have a problem using it.
8. There's a virtual screen capture button found in the 'taskbar', which comes really handy for when you want to show one section of the UI on your blog or to share what you're doing on your tablet with your friends on Facebook; You won't find this feature in Android 3.0. Some are saying that the reason for the delayed release of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is because Samsung wanted to have Android 3.1 running smoothly on it.

Watch my rather lengthy Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hands-on video (pardon the incessant shaking and the redundant shots) --

No official word yet on pricing details nor exact release date. My guesstimate on the SRP? Around Php 30,000-38,000. Should come bundled with top tier Smart Data Plans too.

How to use the Telegraph GO app

The new Telegraph GO app allows your to access our enhanced digital content straight from the newspaper?Photo: ALAMY

The Telegraph is the first media company in the UK to adopt special digital technology that gives readers enhanced content.

It is called Telegraph GO. Here's how it works:

The Daily Telegraph's Travel section is now interactive. Several pages and pictures are embedded with an invisible watermark. You can’t see it, but your smartphone or iPad2 can.

We’ve added this special logo to these pages and pictures so you can identify them.

You simply download the app from the iTunes App Store or the Android Market (the app has an animated tutorial), point your device at the logo and the invisible watermark will direct you to a specific web page that gives you additional information on a relevant subject. This could be anything from the latest travel offers and deals, to complete destination guides with interactive maps and bookable hotel reviews.

If you see the yellow mobile phone logo elsewhere in Telegraph Travel, or in one of the Telegraph’s other supplements, it means there is more relevent content to discover using the app.

* iPhone 3GS

* iPhone 4

* iPad2

* Android device, including the main manufacturers HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, Motorola and Google

1. DOWNLOAD the free Telegraph GO application from the iTunes App Store or Android Market (simply search for “Telegraph GO”).

2. LAUNCH the app and view the animated tutorial showing how it works.

3. LOOK for the special logo on a picture or in text in the Daily Telegraph's Travel section and point the phone at the centre of the image (not at the logo).

4. HOLD your phone about 3-5 inches away from the page, allowing the camera to focus. Then you’ll be taken straight to the enhanced content.

Please note: If you do not get an immediate connection, slowly adjust the distance from the page. The app works best in well-lit areas.

Sears.com accidentally prices Apple's iPad2 for $69

CNN -- You know the old saying -- if a deal is too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true.

That's what happened to a major retailer's online shoppers Friday afternoon.

Sears.com inadvertently advertised Apple's 16GB iPad 2 for $69, much less than the regular advertised price of $744.99.

That low price got the attention of web shoppers and the deal went viral on Twitter and other social media websites.

Many people took advantage of the unbelievable deal, though a Sears spokesperson couldn't give an exact number.

Friday night, Sears posted a statement online telling customers the error was made by a third-party vendor and the deal will not be honored.

"We want you to know that, unfortunately, today one of the Marketplace third party sellers told us that they mistakenly posted incorrect pricing information on two Apple iPad models on the Marketplace portion of the website. If you purchased either of these products recently, your order has been canceled and your account will be credited," the statement said.

Paula Knight of Riverview, Florida, was one of the disappointed customers. Her son has Asperger's syndrome and relied heavily on his iPad for his schoolwork, until it was stolen a few months ago.

So when Knight's friends told her about the great deal on Sears.com, she said she jumped on it.

Knight said immediately after she paid for the iPad, she received e-mail confirmations from both PayPal and Sears.

About six hours later, Sears sent her an e-mail to tell her that her order was canceled because of the mistake.

"I shop online all the time and I've never had anything like this happen," Knight said. "They want to blame a third party, but the order confirmation e-mail I got was from Sears."

"They are a huge company I thought I could trust and rely on," Knight said. "But if they don't honor this, I won't ever shop at Sears again. I just want my order honored."

Tigers Featured In New iPad2 Commercial

by Brian Packey ‧ Aug 2, 2011 11:11 PM EDT

Well, it was posted on YouTube by Apple over a week ago, but I saw this particular commercial for the iPad2, which was released in March, for the first time tonight. Around the 13 second mark, there's a clip from a Tigers home game, (as the voiceover says, "[we'll always] ... and cheer for our favorite team"), which I immediately recognized, after seeing the scoreboard, as the game the Tigers were absolutely drubbed by the Red Sox earlier this season.

I had to look up the specifics, but the two and a half second clip is from the May 26 Tigers/Red Sox game this year. The clip shows current Mud Hen Ryan Perry (who gave up four earned runs in 1.1 IP) delivering a pitch to Kevin Youkilis with two on and two out. Youkilis grounds to second before the commercial fades to another scene. (If you're just dying to know how that play turned out, former Tiger Scott Sizemore redeemed himself from an error on the previous play to get the force out at second to end the inning).

Nothing mind blowing here, but it's kind of cool to see the Tigers get some air time in an iPad2 commercial -- it's just too bad they're getting smoked by the too often publicized Red Sox.

Latista Introduces iPad2 Software

Reston, VA (PRWEB) June 03, 2011

LATISTA Inc. (http://www.latista.com) —the market leader in comprehensive construction quality management and turn-over software solutions for owners and contractors—announces the availability of its new app for the Apple iPadR. The app complements LATISTA’s enterprise-scale web and mobile solution used by thousands of building and engineering professionals around the world. The new offering represents an industry first, making LATISTA the only company offering a variety of hardware clients in the field attached to the same back-office enterprise web solution.

The market for tablet computers is forecasted to grow from $16B in 2010 to $46B in 2014 according to Dmitriy Molchnow, an analyst at Yankee Group*. The iPad app gives LATISTA customers options in mobile platforms and sits alongside LATISTA’s award winning Windows tablet PC-based application within its enterprise framework. LATISTA for iPad includes the ability to access and mark up documents in the field in addition to working with punch list, QA/QC and safety, reporting and production modules that field based personnel—such as inspectors of record, project managers, or project engineers—from contractors, owners and third parties need to be successful.

The option of accessing and inputting information on both iPad or Windows devices and supporting them through the same back-office web solution balances the needs of corporate IT departments and field personnel. LATISTA’s first non-Windows offering allows the same back-office web solution to support multiple field platforms without compromising on scale, security, or ease of use. One defined use case consists of transitioning building information model (BIM) data from the office to the field and back, facilitating decision making around risk, productivity and cost management.

Martha Walz, editor-in-chief of Mobile Enterprise, highlights construction as one sector that will see major enterprise mobility uptake**. In order to drive enterprise solutions into the field, LATISTA seamlessly supports custom QA/QC, safety, and commissioning forms on Apple iPad and Windows devices in a web-based environment. Furthermore LATISTA for iPad takes full advantage of the camera functionality. Images taken with the built-in camera can be used across all relevant modules, where annotations, time and location stamping, bar-coding, sign-off and more are included. The efficacy of the LATISTA solution is guaranteed via its unique synchronization capability that gives office personnel an analytical view of the jobsite.

Chris Ramsey, EVP, LATISTA says: “With our philosophy of providing easy-to-use enterprise solutions to our customers and users, and as the leader in company-wide quality management and turn-over software for large projects, it made sense to become the first provider to offer more than one mobile platform tied to the same award-winning LATISTA back-office web enterprise solution.”

China jails three for stealing iPad design

15-Jun-11, 8:21 PM | Agence France-Presse BEIJING - A court in south China has jailed three people for stealing the design to Apple's iPad2 tablet computer and using it to manufacture counterfeits, state press said Wednesday.

The theft from a plant run by Foxconn, a contract electronics manufacturer, in Guangdong province late last year resulted in fake iPad2s being sold in China before Apple's official launch of the product, the Guangzhou Daily said.

Rampant piracy of everything from consumer electronics to luxury handbags and apparel have caused friction between China and its trade partners, leading to billions of dollars in losses annually to intellectual property theft.

A court in Shenzhen city last week sentenced Xiao Chengsong, the legal agent of Maita Electronics, to 18 months in prison and fined him 150,000 yuan ($23,000) for buying the design from two Foxconn workers, the report said.

Xiao allegedly paid 200,000 yuan for the iPad2 design, it said.

Foxconn employee Lin Kecheng, was sentenced to 14 months and fined 100,000 yuan, while another worker identified as Hou Pengna was given a two-year sentence suspended for one year and fined 30,000 yuan, it said.

All three were convicted of the crime of violating commercial secrets, it said.

The iPad2 was officially launched in China, the world's biggest Internet market in May.

In 2010, Apple's iPad, the first generation of the tablet computer, was also pirated before its official launch in China and sold as the "iPed" for only a fraction of the cost of the real product.

Apple confirms Verizon iPad2 technical glitch leaving customers fuming

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 7:56 PM on 13th June 2011

New and improved? Some of Apple's iPad 2s using the Verizon network have been hit by technical glitches

Apple has recalled a number of iPad2 tablets that are designed to run on Verizon's network due to connectivity issues, the company confirmed today.

Each device is hardcoded with a unique MEID code - which stands for mobile equipment identifier.

This works like a serial number for accessing the wireless network service.

The code is sent out to the carrier, which then allows the tablet on to the network.

However, Apple said some iPad2 devices destined for the Verizon carrier were given the same MEID code, which meant one of them would not be able to go online.

'Duplicate MEID codes were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad units for the Verizon 3G network,' an Apple spokeswoman said.

She refused to say how many were affected by the issue but said that the devices would be replaced.

Verizon have declined to comment.

MEID, which stands for mobile equipment identifier, is a unique number that is used to identify a mobile device when it connects to the network. Two devices cannot have the same MEIDcode.

Rumours of a problem first arose last week, with reports that Apple was intercepting the tablet computers shipped from China by FedEx.

However, it appears the message was not passed on to Apple's customer services team, leaving customers fuming.

A user called HLS77 told the official Apple Forum: 'ipad2 makes it all they way from CHINA to within 40 miles of our house and they are returning it to the sender!!

'I called Fedex and they said it was an Apple request. Apple says it's a fedex problem - and I quote "why would we ask to return your ipad that you have been waiting for?"'

Apple employees have been scanning the serial codes on newly delivered devices? to see if they carry the problematic codes.

One employee in a U.S store told 9to5mac.com said he sent back over one hundred devices.

It is not the first time that the iPad2 has been hit by a technical glitch.

Apple revealed in April that some Verizon iPad 2 users were having to restart their iPad each time they disconnected from their 3G network.

They said this was because the AT&T iPad and Verizon iPad used different chipsets. The issue was later fixed through a software update.
